Project Presentation

The Istanbul metropolitan municipality, with its 18 million inhabitants, is committed to resolving its pollution challenges in order to protect the Marmara Sea from further contamination. To solve this problem, the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (ISKI) awarded the contract to a consortium, led by PWT, for a turnkey construction of one of the largest and most modern wastewater treatment plants in Europe.

Planning, turnkey construction and five-year operation of a wastewater treatment plant in Istanbul

The turnkey plant built by the consortium includes full biological treatment of the sewage with biological phosphorous removal and extended nitrogen removal. At the first stage, the plant is sized for a population equivalent of 2 million and treats 400,000 m³ of sewage per day.

A future extension has already been considered in the design of the plant.
The treated effluent is discharged into the Marmara Sea. Primary and surplus sludge is digested, mechanically dewatered and dried up to 95 %. Biogas from the sludge digestion is co-generated in turbines respectively used for heating purposes. The biogas produced during digestion is converted into electricity via gas turbines or used for heating purposes. The investment volume of the entire plant amounted to 118 million euros.
